The Basic Instrumentation and Control Trainer was developed so as to enable students to practice the notions of instrumentation, regulation, control and automation of continuous process. The trainer also allows the students to become familiar with real process in permitting them to connect the different components of the system, initiate different calibrations and set up tuning parameters. The assembly is mounted, inspected and delivered to be used immediately. The different educational aspects are taken into consideration during the conception, as well as assuring that the final assembly will be easy to move, sturdy, attractive, safe, flexible,
and versatile.


The conception itself was designed in close collaboration with technical college professors and technicians from industries. The choice of processes, loops and their static and dynamic characteristics (time constants,
time delays, process gains) were all made carefully.


The system is composed of 2 loops:

  • Flow
  • Level


Process Concept
The system consists of pumping water into a reservoir, and recycling this water. Using a very quiet pump, water from a reserve is pumped into a reservoir (30 inches) by way of a control valve, which control the level if the system is in a single loop. The output of this reservoir discharges into a reserve and returns to the pump.


The basic trainer contains 2 loops (flow/level), allowing the students to become familiar with:

  • ABB CM30 process controller with 4 to 20 mA output and input (Template Extended)
  • Flow measurement with ABB 264 pressure flowmeter including 0-30” range of water
  • Level measurement with Burkert 8335 turbine flowmeter
  • 1/2” stainless steel control valve using Jamesbury electro pneumatic actuator
  • Neles NP724 electro pneumatic positionner
  • Armstrong pump 0-4 USGPM
  • Current/pressure signals converted with Fairchild TA6000
  • Control panel for loop selecting w/panic button
  • Two (2) polyethylene reservoirs with PVC mounting assembly
  • Aluminum frame
  • Stainless steel hoses and fittings
  • Trainer mounted in two sections

The assembly has been designed to meet vocational school electrical curriculum requirements. It deels with:

I got the half car out of the crate and working yesterday and today I had my Level 3 Electronic Climate Control diagnostics lab using it. This teaching aid is great! The workmanship and design is excellent and it is just perfect for the Level 3 curriculum, including the upcoming changes. We were fortunate that the IPro scan tool we received from the Uniselect donation communicates quite well with the Audi CAN bus system. The Audi also has the electronically controlled, clutchless compressor which is covered in our theory classes so it's a good reinforcement to be able to see it in action, manipulate it and communicate with it. I am very pleased with the quality and applicability of our ConsuLab products (including the engine/AC bench we got recently). They allow me to teach up to 8 students in great detail, whereas only one or two at a time can be involved in a full car. I am looking forward to the imminent arrival of our AC board.
