 CL-U211   Unitec Eddy Current Brake
PDF

The CL-U211 Unitec Eddy Current Brake can be coupled to any machine console in a matter of seconds to load the machine and measure torque and output. The braking is produced by a revolving steel drum with copper lining against a stationary electromagnet assembly which is attached to a scale. The resulting eddy currents produce the braking torque.

Control of the braking torque is achieved by varying the flux linkage between the magnet assembly and the revolving drum. This is done by controlling the excitation of the electromagnets with a built-in variable voltage DC power supply. This power supply consists of a variable autotransformer, bridge rectifier, power-on light. Power requirement is 120V AC, 8 A.

The CL-U211 does not require water cooling. Load provided is stable and can be smoothly controlled. A transfer switch is provided on the unit to enable excitation of the electromagnets from an external power supply. This to facilitate remote control, when it is desired to control the braking torque automatically from speed, and other transducers in a closed-loop servo system. The CL-U211 can also be used to teach the principle of Lenz's Law, phenomenon of Eddy currents, etc. The mechanism is clearly visible through a transparent plastic cover on the front. The brake has a maximum capacity of 12.5 lbs/ft. of torque at 1800 RPM intermittent duty, (equivalent to about 4.25 horsepower). At lower speeds the capacity is proportionally less. For applications requiring higher capacity or sustained operation, we recommend the CL-U203, Contactless Torquemeter, which has a capacity of 20 lbs. at all speeds, equivalent to about 6.75 HP at 1800 RPM.
